GOP Leaders Set Record Straight on Maricopa County Funding, Chairman Salmon

October 21, 2005

Earlier this week, The Arizona Conservative was told that Maricopa County GOP was losing state funding from the Arizona Republican Party because it had passed two resolutions this summer critical of Senator John McCain's politics. And The Arizona Conservative was also told that AZ GOP Chairman Matt Salmon is going to resign in January. State and county GOP leaders today refuted those claims.

Larry Pickard, chairman of Maricopa County GOP, told The Arizona Conservative today: "First, the presumption that Senator McCain had or has anything to do with the problems experienced by the MCRC [Maricopa County Republican Committee] could not be more inaccurate. Senator McCain and his staff has been courteous and responsive in every respect and I truly appreciate their help. As far as our financial woes are concerned, I would point out that prior to the Mesa Town Hall, Senator McCain raised much needed money for the benefit of several of our MCRC districts. I could only hope others in our delegation will follow suit."

Pickard said that unlike other GOP county organizations, MCRC has a history of total dependency on the AZGOP. He also issued a strong statement of support for Chairman Salmon.

"I also think that we have the right the leadership in place, starting with Matt Salmon, to start turning this monstrosity, even if it's only a few degrees at a time. Wherever the gossip started about a Salmon departure, I don't know but I can tell you this. We all better hope and pray that Matt stays put because he is the right guy at the right time. I think if you take a close look at our history you would agree. In the meantime, I will be one of many begging him to stay."

Furthermore, Pickard said that starting immediately the MCRC will begin a quest toward funding self dependency. "Since this has never been the case, I don't think anyone believes it will be easy. Something of value never comes easy ...," he said.

Bill Christiansen, executive director of the Arizona Republican Party, said, "Matt Salmon has no intention of stepping down before the end of his two-year term as Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party."
