Turning up the Heat on the Left: National Federation of Republican Assemblies Convention Convenes Friday in Scottsdale

By Dennis Durband
August 31, 2005

Conservatives will go to great lengths to turn up the heat on the left. Hundreds of conservative Republicans are gathering for an annual convention this weekend in the Sonoran Desert and the triple-digit temperatures of Scottsdale to do just that during the National Federation of Republican Assemblies’ (NFRA) national convention.

The convention theme is “Turning up the Heat on the Left,” but the agenda also calls for turning up the volume on conservatism. Representatives of state Republican Assemblies all over the nation will be in attendance to uphold the organization’s reputation as the “Republican Wing of the Republican Party” and stalwart defender of the U.S. Constitution.

A presidential cattle call for the 2008 election drew just one candidate – Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. U.S. Sen. George Allen of Virginia withdrew because the host Arizona Republican Assembly censured U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona in June. Liberal Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, is also a no-show.

Cong. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, the congressional leader in calling for control of the porous border, is scheduled to address the assemblies. Many Americans would prefer to see Tancredo run for the White House in three years. He is extremely popular in Arizona and has been “adopted” as a congressman for the state’s southern-most district.

This convention will feature a marathon of speakers starting Friday night and ending Sunday on a wide range of topics:

  • Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.)
  • Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.)
  • Congressman Bob Barr (R-Ga.)
  • Congressman Trent Franks (R-Ariz.)
  • Convention Chairman!Grover Norquist, Americans for Tax Reform
  • Jim Gilchrist, Founder of the Minuteman Project
  • John F. McManus, Chairman, Stop the FTAA
  • Dr. Rick Scarborough, President of Vision America
  • William Murray, Chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition
  • State Rep. Russell Pearce (R-Ariz.), Arizona's Prop 200
  • State Sen. Karen Johnson (R-Ariz.)
  • Constantin Querard, RINO-Hunter Extraordinaire
  • William Greene, President of RightMarch.com
  • Len Munsil, President of Center for Arizona Policy
  • Alan Korwin, Author, 2nd Amendment Expert
  • Larry Bates, Talk Show Host & Economist
  • Erin Anderson, Illegal Immigration Expert

Tony Mackelprang, president of the Arizona Republican Assembly, said, "We are both honored and delighted to host the NFRA convention in Scottsdale during this upcoming Labor Day weekend. It presents a rare opportunity for
our members, friends and neighbors to meet candidates for both state and national offices and to hear individuals such as Tom Tancredo who are on the leading edge of critical issues like security on the border. Don't rely on the local or national media for an unbiased report, come to the NFRA conference for an accurate and up to date insight on what is really happening in our nation."

Registration for the convention is still open. To make a reservation at the Chaparral Suites in Scottsdale, call (800) 528-1456.

On Monday, conventioneers have the opportunity to travel to Sedona for a sidetrip. The tour will include Montezuma’s Castle National Monument, Sedona and Jerome.
