Protect Marriage Arizona Chair Stanley Killed in Auto Accident

By Cathi Herrod, President, Center for Arizona Policy
July 4, 2006

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I write this note. Lynn Stanley, the chair of the Protect Marriage Arizona (PMA) Coalition, died early Monday morning in a car accident. Lynn was driving home following a weekend visit to relatives in Las Vegas. Lynn planned to be part of a joyous day Wednesday as the PMA Coalition intended to submit over 300,000 signatures to put the marriage amendment on the November ballot. We have delayed the filing of the marriage amendment from Wednesday until Thursday, the last date for us to file the initiative petitions.

Over a year ago, former CAP President Len Munsil recruited Lynn to serve as the PMA chair. Lynn willingly agreed. Len and I have known Lynn for several years as a friend, and as a supporter and believer in CAP’s mission and work. Lynn passionately believed in marriage between one man and one woman. Lynn knew that the state constitutional amendment was the only way to stop activist state judges from redefining marriage. A wife, mom, author, and former radio show host, Lynn understood that Christians are called to be a voice in public policy and to stand for righteousness in the political arena. She was a leader and example to us all. Always asking me what she could do to help; Lynn was working hard to raise money for PMA, to recruit volunteers and to lead the PMA team.

A dear friend, Lynn wrote Bible study books about the fruits of the Spirit and exemplified the fruits of the Spirit daily. She was gentle, joyful in the Lord, peaceful, patient, kind to all around her, full of love, faithful and good. Lynn’s eyes always were on the Lord, the author and perfecter of her faith. Lynn always had a word of encouragement for me and was always ready to serve. Lynn was a woman of prayer. She loved her family – husband of 38 years Fred, and two children, B.J. and Tracie. Lynn was just plain fun and delightful to be around.

If you would like to write a note of thanks and encouragement to the Stanley family, please send it to info@azpolicy.org. We will collect the notes and give them to the Stanley family. At this time, services are pending.

May Lynn’s sudden death be a reminder to us all that man knows not his time. If you are reading this and do not know Jesus Christ as your savior, I encourage you to seek the peace, truth and salvation that only comes through Jesus Christ. Lynn had this peace and knowledge. Today, Lynn is rejoicing as we are grieving. Please remember the Stanley family and those who knew and loved Lynn in your prayers.

“The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job 1:21.
